You Have Smell Receptors Where?!?

This is probably the most amazing bit of knowledge that I have gained lately!–You have olfactory (smell) receptors throughout your entire body! In your skin, heart, liver, kidneys, gut, lungs–just to name a few! This knowledge has so much potential for changing healthcare, is won the Nobel Peace Prize in the 90’s. Since then, many top researchers in the world have been studying this. “The presence of scent receptors outside the nose may seem odd at first, but as Dr. Hanns Hatt and others have observed, odor receptors are among the most evolutionarily ancient chemical sensors in the body, capable of detecting a multitude of compounds, not solely those drifting through the air. ‘If you think of olfactory receptors as specialized chemical detectors, instead of as receptors in your nose that detect smell, then it makes a lot of sense for them to be in other places,’  said Jennifer Pluznick, an assistant professor of physiology at Johns Hopkins University who in 2009 found that olfactory receptors help control metabolic function and regulate blood pressure in the kidneys of mice.”  This quote was taken from an article in tne New York Times. Here is the link, it is a great read!http://www.nytimes.com/…/smell-turns-up-in-unexpected-place…

This knowledge has of course great application to and validation to the use and efficacy of essential oils! ‘Essential Oil science’ and other science that related to the usage of essential oils has become  ‘hot topics’ in many top universities and research facilities further backing up what we already know…Love it!
