21 Steps there, 21 Steps back…100 Steps ahead
21 steps…Yes, I know how many steps it takes to walk out my front door and around to the side of my house to the garbage dumpster. Technically there is someone assigned every week to take out the trash from under the kitchen sink to the dumpster outside. But I usually end up doing it. Not because someone shirked their responsibility…well, maybe they do…but I usually take the opportunity whenever I can. Why? Well, it’s certainly not because I love the smell of the big dumpster! (I kinda am in awe of people who manage to clean their dumpsters…when I grow-up I aspire to be someone who does that, but that’s not happening anytime soon…)
So why do I love those 42 steps?
Because I use it as a mini ‘reset’ for myself. I can walk out of whatever chaos or noise or “mommy, mommy, mommies” that are in the home for about 45seconds. I can breathe in, breathe out, and usually even throw a few words up to Heaven. Sometime they’re words of gratitude and let’s be honest, sometimes they are desperate pleas for strength and patience.
But I have found that an amazing thing has happened by the time I walk back in the door
-things may not have changed in the home in the 45seconds that it took me to walk those 42 steps- but I have changed inside-just a bit, and just enough.
That is why when this Mama counts her blessings, I include ‘Being able to take out the trash.’
